We chose menstrual cups because they provide a safe, sustainable and long-lasting solution for young women facing period poverty.A menstrual cup is a soft, flexible medical-grade silicone cup that is inserted into the vagina to collect menstrual fluid. When used correctly, it is hygienic, comfortable and safe. Once inserted, most users do not feel it and can continue their daily activities, including going to school, working, exercising and swimming.Each cup can be reused for up to 10 years, replacing around 2,500 disposable pads or tampons. Why did Cup&Go! begin on the Island of Mozambique?

The Island of Mozambique was chosen for our first pilot programme because the need was significant and very few menstrual health initiatives had reached the area.Menstrual products were difficult to access, fresh water was limited, and many young women faced barriers to managing their periods safely and with dignity.The menstrual cup offered a practical, long-lasting solution that was particularly well suited to the local context.Working alongside trusted local partners, we launched our first programme there in 2020.The results exceeded all expectations, with more than 92% of participants embracing the menstrual cup and a significant reduction in school absenteeism.Those encouraging results gave us the confidence to expand the programme to other regions of Mozambique and later to Madagascar.The Island of Mozambique will always hold a special place in the Cup&Go! story. It is where one promise became reality.

Why Nosy Be?

Following the success of our pilot programme in Madagascar, Cup&Go! chose Nosy Be for the next phase of the project because we believe it offers the opportunity to create meaningful and lasting impact.Around 14% of the island's population are young women aged 15–30 a generation whose education, health and economic participation will help shape the future of their communities.We are also proud to work alongside Wings of Change Association, a trusted local organisation providing education and vocational training to young people facing financial challenges. Their local knowledge and commitment make them an ideal partner to deliver the programme.By combining menstrual health education, reusable menstrual cups and strong local partnerships, we hope to help another 500 young women continue their education, succeed at work and unlock new opportunities.

Every Cup&Go! programme is delivered in partnership with trusted local organisations.Working alongside COULDYOU?, our implementation partner, and carefully selected community partners, we ensure that every programme is adapted to local needs and delivered with respect and dignity.Each programme follows the same approach:Community leaders, schools and local stakeholders are informed and involved.Young women attend menstrual health education sessions in small groups.Participants receive a reusable menstrual cup and practical training on how to use it safely.Local trainers provide ongoing support during the first months of use.Each programme is evaluated, and an impact report is produced to measure the results and guide future programmes.This approach ensures that every programme creates lasting impact while strengthening local knowledge, employment and community engagement.
